Bill of non-rights

The following has been attributed to Lewis Napper, a Jackson, Mississippi computer programmer. He didn't expect his essay -- a tart 11-point list of "rights" Americans don't have -- to become an Internet legend.

'We the sensible people of the United States, in an attempt to help everyone get along, restore some semblance of justice, avoid more riots, keep our nation safe, promote positive behavior, and secure the blessings of debt-free liberty to ourselves and our great-great-great- grandchildren, hereby try one more time to ordain and establish some common sense guidelines for the terminally whiny, guilt ridden, delusional. We hold these truths to be self evident: that a whole lot of people are confused by the Bill of Rights and are so dim they require a Bill of NON-Rights.'

ARTICLE I:You do not have the right to a new car, big screen TV, or any other form of wealth. More power to you if you can legally acquire them, but no one is guaranteeing anything.

ARTICLE II:You do not have the right to never be offended. This country is based on freedom, and that means freedom for everyone -- not just you! You may leave the room, turn the channel, express a different opinion, etc.; but the world is full of dummies, and probably always will be.

ARTICLE III:You do not have the right to be free from harm. If you stick a screwdriver in your eye, learn to be more careful; do not expect the tool manufacturer to make you and all your relatives independently wealthy.

ARTICLE IV:You do not have the right to free food and housing. Americans are the most charitable people to be found, and will gladly help anyone in need, but we are quickly growing weary of subsidizing generation after generation of professional couch potatoes who achieve nothing more than the creation of another generation of professional couch potatoes.

ARTICLE V:You do not have the right to free health care. That would be nice, but from the looks of public housing, we're just not interested in public health care.

ARTICLE VI:You do not have the right to physically harm other people. If you kidnap, rape, intentionally maim, or kill someone, don't be surprised if the rest of us want to see you get the blue juice.

ARTICLE VII:You do not have the right to the possessions of others. If you rob, cheat, or coerce away the goods or services of other citizens, don't be surprised if the rest of us get together and lock you away in a place where you still won't have the right to a big screen color TV or a life of leisure.

ARTICLE VIII:You do not have the right to a job. All of us sure want you to have a job, and will gladly help you along in hard times, but we expect you to take advantage of the opportunities of education and vocational training laid before you to make yourself useful.

ARTICLE IX:You do not have the right to happiness . Being an American means that you have the right to PURSUE happiness, which by the way, is a lot easier if you are unencumbered by an over abundance of idiotic laws created by those of you who were confused by the Bill of Rights.

ARTICLE X:This is an English speaking country. We don't care where you came from, English is our language. Learn it and USE it!
Lastly

ARTICLE XI:You do not have the right to change our country's history or heritage. This country was founded on the belief in one true God. And yet, you are given the freedom to believe in any religion, any faith, or no faith at all; with no fear of persecution. The phrase IN GOD WE TRUST is part of our heritage and history, sorry if you are uncomfortable with it.

If you agree, share this with a friend. No, you don't have to, and nothing tragic will befall you if you don't. I just think it's about time common sense is allowed to flourish.

Sensible people of the United States must speak out because if you do not, who will?

Funny when I read that list it reminds me so much of all the great advice my Dad gave me growing up. Thanks!

100% true.

Too bad today's generation snowflake is being brainwashed in schools and on FB.

Article XII. Life isn't always going to be fair... adapt, improvise and deal with it and stop whining.
Article XIII. You are occasionally going to run into morons like Huck, just laugh it off. Lol

I just got back from an award ceremony for young essayists who wrote about the separation of powers for Law Day. Every one of them could easily out debate anyone on this board. Stop whining about the straw man "generation snowflake".

Article XIV Going into debt is your choice and responsibility (with consequences), don't expect me to give you a bailout because you overextended yourself or didn't read the fine print.

Article XV... Not every issue or societal problem is a Federal Government Responsibility, read the 10th Amendment.

This should be #1 IMO

ARTICLE I:You do not have the right to a new car, big screen TV, or any other form of wealth.

We have and do not forfeit a basic universal right to education, higher education, neutral Internet access, and all other forms of publicly-cultivated knowledge.

Quote:
ARTICLE II:You do not have the right to never be offended.

You have a reasonable expectation of equal respect for your spirituality, individuality, and cultural distinctiveness. Nobody's rights extend beyond yours, nor may they trod over roughshod just because they're too arrogant to Get It and think it's cool to degrade others' hearts with uninvited attacks against difference for the sake of wrongful cultural and social curation imposed upon others against their will.

Quote:
ARTICLE III:You do not have the right to be free from harm.

You do have a right to be free of others' wrongful harm, whether it's spiritual, material, economic, or even social. No government authority, no corporation, and no cult has a right to harm you or violate you in any way or form, direct or indirect.

Quote:
ARTICLE IV:You do not have the right to free food and housing.

You actually do. There's absolutely no need or moral justification for anyone to be homeless, it most certainly is not a resource or prosperity issue. There's enough of both in the world that nobody need go homeless, and it's a sickness and pathology that so many do, even in 'prosperous' places such as these United States of America. If you can't afford or arrange a warm dry place to sleep on your own, then society does absolutely have an intense moral obligation from the top down to help you out of compassion, Christian or otherwise, long before one cent is spent on any misguided aspirations for militarism.

Quote:
ARTICLE V:You do not have the right to free health care.

You actually do. You just do, full stop. It's a universal human right to have access to health care, and because not all people have access to money, it's implicit this means in some instances health care must be free. It's a social obligation of a society and civilization to take care of its own. Anything less is self-defeating pathology on a breathtaking grand scale.

Quote:
ARTICLE VI:You do not have the right to physically harm other people.

Who thinks they do? Hint: They're all hard-right fascists. They seek authority so that, like cowardly bullies, they may harm others from positions of safety and authority and act as if it is somehow they have a right to do so inscrutably, creating endless loss, a spirit of malice, and harm in our world for the sake of their violent arrogant aspirations to dominate.

Quote:
ARTICLE VII:You do not have the right to the possessions of others.

You don't have a right to privatize the commonwealth, or degrade the public's world. You may not perform agriculture or industry that poisons the water, air, soil, food, animals, people, cities, homes, the world. You can't treat our world as an open sewer. You also may not rob ancient tombs or sites. There's a hell of a lot of stolen property and prosperity that should be returned to its rightful owners fair and square, like, for example, every cent and item from every asset forfeiture an agent of the government perpetuated against a member of the public without any court conviction. The sophistry and self-justification of pirates never convinces the good.

Quote:
ARTICLE VIII:You do not have the right to a job.

You do have a right to prosperity, and the world is so prosperous now, so populous, with automation so powerful, few need work driven like slaves nor need they make so little for it. It's theft and slavery when the prosperity is vacuumed up, or cornered by monopolies and corrupted failed government protection rackets.

Quote:
ARTICLE IX:You do not have the right to happiness.

Of course you have a right to happiness. That's obviously implicit in the right to pursue. Only an objectively fascist demagogue would be confused about that.

Quote:
ARTICLE X:This is an English speaking country.

This is a country that speaks all tongues, old and new. The old words, Sumerian, Akkadian, Greek-- they all have as much power and meaning as they ever did. English is some mongeral thing, a combination of German and French and every other culture encountered. American English isn't a language, it's a celebration of all the languages and all the cultures, together. As such, the official language of the United States of America is: all languages.

Quote:
ARTICLE XI:You do not have the right to change our country's history or heritage.

Thou doth protest muchly, but then, you are the sort of spiteful creature that would write a manifesto seeking to take away and degrade that which was always ours, as per all good divine will. In a just civilization, rights are protected and they are not stripped away.

Oh no worries, I feel life itself has been quite generous enough. It's a little like I just spent over a decade on Mount Olympus and it seems it rubbed off a bit. Here's to the spirit of Evergreen!

Good for you...
That's the spirit!

But I'll play along here... like joeschmo said,
My father taught me many of the non-rights on that list.
And his advise has served me well over the years.

Who taught you that those non-rights are actually real rights in your mind?
Is there a constitution that spells them out- or did you just pull that opinion out of thin air?
