Irma is up to 180 mph winds.... its going to get rough. I hope it tracks more east than what they are predicting right now or it will be devastating.

I think I read there is a high pressure system in the Bahamas forcing it west to Florida. If I lived in Miami, I would be flying to see my Colorado relatives.

High Levels of Carcinogen Found in Houston Area After Harvey
New York Times, By HIROKO TABUCHI, SEPT. 6, 2017

High levels of the carcinogen benzene were detected in a Houston neighborhood close to a Valero Energy refinery, local health officials said Tuesday, heightening concerns over potentially hazardous leaks from oil and gas industry sites damaged by Hurricane Harvey.

Preliminary air sampling in the Manchester district of Houston showed concentrations of up to 324 parts per billion of benzene, said Loren Raun, chief environmental science officer for the Houston Health Department. That is above the level at which federal safety officials recommend special breathing equipment for workers.

Health officials also detected high levels of volatile organic compounds, which have been linked to a variety of health problems, including liver damage and cancer. “For the short term, the risks are dizziness, nausea, lightheadedness. But this could also play into your long-term cancer risks,” she said. “We’re very concerned about people’s long-term health in the area.”

Researchers have found elevated levels of childhood leukemia in several areas in Houston, including Manchester, a plight blamed on high levels of chemicals in the air.

Benzene is the main and most volatile component of gasoline. I worked at a refinery in Florida when a small hurricane went through and all of the tanks overflowed into a big field about 60 acres beside it. We spread tubs of bacteria around and 3 days later, there was no trace.

We really just need to shut down every refinery in the country, just in case. Horses will be a great alternative, except for the methane farts... damn.

Yeah, we'll likely see the remnants here - maybe some strong gusts. I'll be heading into Florida most likely to help out our stations down there after the storm. Looks like it will miss my rentals in the panhandle, but might get my central Florida properties.

27 million people in Florida, where can they all evacuate to? 10 percent of the American population could be affected by this storm if it goes up the Atlantic coast.
