JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)– A brush fire burning along Highway 285 on Wednesday afternoon forced the evacuation of five to 10 homes.

The fire broke out along the highway near South Turkey Creek Road. The homes are located on Granzella Road. The evacuated homes include the Arrowhead Manor Bed and Breakfast.

Smoke could be seen billowing from the area from the CBS4 Tech Center camera.

Arrowhead Fire near Highway 285 forces evacuations

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. – Some homes had to be evacuated as crews battle a growing brush fire near Highway 285 and South Turkey Creek Road on Wednesday afternoon, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said.

Residents on Granzella Road and Rock Ridge Road in Morrison were told to evacuate, the sheriff’s office said.

No structures are currently involved in the fire, officials with the Inter-Canyon Fire Protection District said.

Northbound Highway 285 is closed in the area as crews battle the fire, according to CSP. Southbound lanes of the highway remain open.

There is no estimated time of reopening for the highway.

Authorities say the fire's rapid growth near South Turkey Creek on Highway 285 led to the immediate closure of the route.

Colorado State Patrol confirmed the road closure, noting they aren't sure when the road may reopen. Smoke from the fire can be seen for miles along the route.

When first reported by first responders, officials estimated the fire to be between three and five acres, however the fire has since grown.

As it's grown, the fire prompted the evacuation of homes in the area near well-known Arrowhead Manor Bed and Breakfast.

13-14 homes on Granzella Road and Rock Ridge Road in Morrison were told to evacuate, the sheriff’s office said. An additional 25-30 homes were told to prepare to evacuate.

The evacuation point for residents is the West Jefferson Middle School gym, police said.
