Maxwell Falls, Cub Creek Park may be shut down due to unattended campfires

Concerns about camping, unleashed dogs and unattended and abandoned campfires have led the U.S. Forest Service to consider closing access to both Maxwell Falls and the Cub Creek Park area, just south of Evergreen.

According to Jim Fiorelli, acting district ranger for Arapaho National Forest and the Clear Creek Ranger District, the possible closures are one of several solutions the agency is considering as it struggles to protect the natural resources and maintain both safety and sanitation standards in the area.“Our focus is to encourage responsible and respectful use of National Forest lands and that visitors are being good stewards of the land and resources,” said Fiorelli. “The Forest Service is continuing to work with our partners, recreationists and neighbors to determine our options and solutions for addressing the situation. At this time, we have not yet determined if a closure will be put in place.

Why not go in there and root out the troublemakers? Or offer rewards for tips turning them in.

Respect is at such a low for people, nature, everything. Whatever happened to forest rangers?

This area has become a circus- Every time I drive up brook forrest the whole scene around Maxwell falls is clogged up with tourists- no doubt they are messing up the area with their dogs.

I don't know how the falls area got so popular- maybe the hiking magazines keep talking about it. Maybe the "mommy press" keeps doing stories about it. When I was in high school we could go hiking in there and not see any other people.

Maybe they should close the Maxwell falls upper and lower trails for a season to give the plants a break- but I do not think they need to close the entire cub creek park. That would be overkill.

Or just ban parking on brook forrest road for a year- that would do it.

Banning parking on the road would be fine. If the lot is full, it is at capacity!

These so called Forest rangers need to get some hiking boots and get out of the office more too and patrol.

Good lord, you can be misanthropic when you want to be, BearMtnHIB. Maxwell Falls is popular because it's a nice forested mountainous hike in a fairly special spot near a creek and cliffs. As far as I know, it's a fairly unique offering in the Denver front range region. "mommy press?" What does that even mean? I can't tell, but I can smell the dripping bile from here. Why are you so filled with spite for people, generally? Were you bullied in school?

A good time to visit Maxwell Falls, particularly on summer weekends, is about 60-90 minutes before sunset. By that point it's cleared out enough that you can expect to find non-overflow parking.

Ironically, I've seen fewer campfires at Maxwell Falls this year than in prior years. My biggest complaint might be people who only get it half right-- they poop scoop after their dogs, but then leave tied-off plastic bags of dog crap along the trailside. What kind of deranged thinking is that?

The "mommy press" is our local channels like 2,4,7,9. Their broadcasts in the middle of the day are geared towards the "mommies" lucky enough to stay home during the middle of the day. They will run stories full of compassion and empathy like "finding a forever home for roxy the dog". I just figured that could be why Maxwell falls is clogged up with dogs crapping everywhere.

I suppose for this to make sense, one would first have to believe that local television is as influential as it once was forty or fifty years ago, and then from there they would seemingly have to strive hard to look for additional ways to divide and form some opinion hinged on some narrow view of gender of all things. I guess only 'mommies' have 'compassion' and 'empathy' or some similar microaggression?


We've spent less time in fire ban than in recent years with more moisture generally this spring, but still I've noticed relatively few open fires, at least at lower Maxwell Falls. The biggest issues this year have been dog poop and people hiking trash in. And jeers for people who haul up boomboxes because they can't stand the idea of being free from mankind's noises long enough to hear nature's voice. What's that all about? Go to a city park if that's your gig.
