Elk Meadow off-leash dog park to close

Jefferson County Open Space has announced that the 107-acre Elk Meadow off-leash dog
park will close completely April 4th, despite community efforts to keep the park at least
partially open.

Too many users of the park failed to pick up their dog's poop, which led to high e-coli levels
contaminating the stream that runs through the park and ongoing safety concerns. This despite
community collection efforts to clean up the park, public problem solving meetings held by
Open Space, and tentative agreements to keep 8 acres of the park open.

The non-profit Friends of Evergreen Dog Park were left frustrated by Open Space criteria
while an alternate site is located.

The closure will be strictly enforced with a $100 fine for offenders.
